Q-Busta is a smartphone application in development by Sapien Innovations
Q-Busta is a smart-phone application to enable consumers to skip queues at theatre bars, festivals, events, sandwich bars, pubs and holiday parks.
Steve Hales, CEO of Sapien, said, “Everyone has experienced queuing for food or beverages at bars and stalls out and about. Q-Busta provides the ability to skip queues by choosing, ordering and paying for items using a smartphone. There are no surcharges for the consumer, instead vendors sign up for a small subscription fee.”
Below are some early screen-shots of the application. More details coming shortly to the Q-Busta website.

Camvine, an early stage Cambridge based company with innovative technology for digital signage …
I have been working with Camvine since September 2008.
It was set-up by Dr. Quentin Stafford-Fraser. Q is hugely capable technically and has that incredible way of describing complicated things so simply. For more on Quentin, visit his blog: http://www.statusq.org/
The Camvine digital signage solution, CODA, is a cross between innovative computer hard-ware and Software as a Service (SaaS). We are carving out a solution which is simple to use, high capable and very affordable.
Camvine are a great company and they represent so much about innovation and entrepreneurship in the Cambridge area. For more details, see their website: http://camvine.com/

Getting into Start-up Relationships Which You Might Have to Get Out Of …
We have recently been party to some more conversations where business founders want to part.
The inevitable seems likely, the parties cannot agree how to divide the business – and its a ‘Mexican Stand Off’. Who knows what will happen next, and we make no public predicitions here.
In the meantime, to avoid this very situation here’s the bold Mexican Shoot-out clause posted back in May: http://sapien-innovations.co.uk/?p=417
Incidentally there are variants of these and they are well outlined by Manie Spoelstra: http://www.mediate.com/articles/spoelstra6.cfm
Yes they are bold, BUT with hindsight appropriate. Get in touch if you been through the process of using the clause too.
The next Continuous Processing seminar is planned for early 2010. Input is requested from potential attendees …
Sapien Process Technologies is updating its web-site. In the mean time this page has been set-up on behalf of Sapien Process Technologies to support the organisation of a second continuous processing seminar.

In February 2009, Sapien Process Technologies organised a seminar for pharmaceutical and fine chemical firms on continuous processing. The event included speakers from GSK, Genzyme, Pfizer and Phoenix Chemicals. It was regarded as a great success and there have been many requests for another event in early 2010. This page has been set up to tailor the event for those who attend.
Some of the feedback from the 50 attendees last time:-

INPUT FOR THE 2010 SEMINAR
Last year’s topics talks had primarily a global, big pharma emphasis. This time we are seeking suggestions and preferences of all kinds.

Freemium models continue to go from strength to strength …
At Sapien we are becoming increasingly bigger users of freemium SaaS, and a number of our clients are incorporating freemium strategies in their business models.
Our favourite freemiums include Evernote, Dropbox, RTM (Remember The Milk) and Kashflow ( – a good UK example).
For users, freemium solutions offer the opportunity to experience the basic functionality of software for free with the option to access a fuller, paid-for service (often ‘Pro’ account) later.
For SaaS start-ups, the freemium business model acts as as a viral marketing ‘accelerator’ to gain users. There’s a useful discussion on freemium being used by start-ups by Om Malik here – including the interesting stat that 0.5% of Evernote users convert to fee paying.
